Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils in High Density Black Review + Swatches

Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils is designed to give a “false lash effect,” “an intense look in a single stroke,” and “intensity,” “curve,” and “long-lasting effectiveness.” The mascara made my lashes look super dark and long, and they looked very fluttery and feathery (there wasn’t much volume, but by my standards, the given effect still passes the “false lash effect” test). However, this mascara doesn’t hold a curl for long, so that is one extra drawback. (4/5)

I was disappointed to see that this mascara flaked after 8 hours. I’ve rarely experienced flaking. However, it was after a full day’s worth of wear, so I think for many consumers, that can be forgiven. (4.5/5)

The first thing I noticed about Volume Effet Faux Cils was that it applied so smoothly. It had a little bit of a wet texture, but it wasn’t thick the way most wet mascaras can be. Application was perfect, there was no clumping or any difficulties when putting the product on. It also dries quickly and feels so soft and natural on. Like, if you touch it, it doesn’t feel like there’s anything on, it feels like your natural lashes, just better. (5/5)

Volume Effet Faux Cils has some of the most luxe packaging I’ve seen on a mascara, and at this price point, that’s wonderful. This is the only mascara I have that comes in a metal tube (while simultaneously resisting fingerprints). I also like how the YSL logo fits into place every time you twist the cap back on. I think it smells nice as well, but then again, I think all mascaras smell nice. The bristles are short and close together on a long wand; however the length doesn’t make it cumbersome or difficult to use. (5/5)

This mascara will definitely put a dent in your wallet at $32 USD. There’s 0.35 oz of product in the tube, making the price per ounce ration only $91.43 (for reference, one MAC shadow is $300 an ounce, making this mascara a lot more cost-effective than it initially appears). As always, I factor “bang for your buck” into the price score, and I believe Volume Effet Faux Cils is definitely worth the price. It’s certainly a luxury cost, but it delivers luxury quality.(4.5/5)

Wow Factor:
This mascara definitely grabbed my attention in a positive way. I accidentally fell asleep with it on and didn’t wake up with a hint of product residue, That’s how light and natural it feels. And it makes the lashes look incredible and truly feels like a high-quality, luxury product. I was disappointed that it flaked a little and didn’t do much for maintaining a curl, though.  (4.5/5)

I was impressed by this product. It was exactly what I’d hoped for from YSL–luxury and quality. You definitely feel a little more elite using this mascara! It’s a great product and I recommend anyone whose considering a purchase to take the plunge. It won’t disappoint. (4.6) A-

Would I repurchase?

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara Review + Photos

Effectiveness: Perversion promises to be “lengthening and volumizing.” This description is accurate enough. I found this mascara to be more lengthening than volumizing, but I did notice both results. The results weren’t amazing, but not disappointing, either. (4/5)

Wear: I achieved perfect wear using this mascara. It lasted a full 8 hours looking good as new. It held a curl for the duration of the testing period and the lashes stayed a rich, dark black. (5/5)

Formula: Urban Decay describes Perversion mascara as “ultracreamy,” and I have to agree. This mascara feels really wet. This can lead to some clumps if you rush application. However, the mascara dries down and does not budge (I accidentally rubbed my eye and there wasn’t the tiniest flake or smudge). (4.5/5)

Packaging: The tube is sleek, shiny plastic with stylish lilac lettering. The wand is chubby with bristles that are varied in size. I didn’t find it cumbersome to use, although as with all thicker brushes, it can take some care to get into the tiny baby hairs in the inner corners. (5/5)

Price: I received this as a 100-point perk from Sephora, but the full size is $22 USD for 0.4 oz of product. You can also purchase a travel size for $12 USD. For the full size, it comes out to $55 an ounce, which isn’t terrible. (For comparison, Benefit’s They’re Real! is $2 more expensive and contains 0.1 oz less product).

As always, I weigh in on whether or not I believe a product is worth the price. Perversion delivers on rich color, ease of use, staying power, and doing what it says it will, even if it’s not the most innovative or amazing in the industry. It’s a reliable mascara without any bells and whistles, so I believe it warrants it’s price tag. (5/5)

Wow Factor: I wasn’t blown away by Perversion. I have less expensive mascaras that give better length and volume. However, I wasn’t let down by the product, because it shines in it’s staying power, ability to hold a curl, lack of smudging, and dark, rich color. (3.5/5)

Overall: I enjoy this mascara, but I often find myself reaching for other mascaras. It’s nice and gets the job done well enough, but it didn’t make enough of an impression in length or volume to really stand out to me. (4.5) A-

Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant Mascara Review + Photos

This mascara claims to do it all, claiming that it “add(s) length, volume, and curl.” It didn’t disappoint me! It gives both volume and length (although I found this to be a bit more lengthening). It also stayed curled for the whole 8-hour wear period. It also makes the lashes look nice and dark. I can see why they call it “Smoky Extravagant,” since it would be the perfect accent to a nighttime smoky eye. (5/5)

Smoky Extravagant wore flawlessly. It stayed put for a full 8 hours without flaking, smudging,or losing it’s curl. As promised, too. The brand says SE provides “long-lasting wear in one stroke.” (5/5)

This is a drier mascara, which I personally prefer, because it doesn’t feel thick, clumpy, or flaky on the lashes. It holds a curl perfectly and stays in place effortlessly. (5/5)

On the exterior, the tube is sturdy black plastic. It doesn’t feel cheap, or overly luxurious. The wand is conical, with a quite wide base and “precision tip.” It’s a bit cumbersome due to it’s size, so I imagine those with small eyes may find it difficult to work with. However, this extreme cone shape works well, since the wider base flares out the outer lashes, and the narrow tip gets close to the inner corner, so every lash gets coated. (4.5/5)

This mascara comes in two sizes, the standard (0.23 oz) size, which is $24, and the mini travel size (0.16 oz) size, which is the one I purchased for $12 USD. The full size is $104.34 per ounce, and the travel size is $75 per ounce. This is actually a bit more than similarly priced products (Dior Diorshow is one dollar more, but has 0.15 oz more product, coming out to $65.78 per ounce. That’s cheaper than MUFE SE’s travel size!)

So the price isn’t ideal, but how is the quality for the cost? By now, it’s clear that I love Smoky Extravagant. It’s not my absolute favorite, because the wand makes it tricky to apply (and I have larger eyes.) (4/5)

Wow Factor:
This is a mascara that does what it says it will, excellently. I liked the result I got while wearing it. My lashes looked dark, full, long, and curled all day. The only major drawback is the size of the wand. (4/5)

I really enjoyed Smoky Extravagant. I think it’s a great mascara for creating sexy, nighttime lashes. It’s the kind of thing that’s perfect for a party or date night. It makes the lashes look more intense, with that desirable fanned out, winged out shape. If you don’t mind the price, or the cumbersome wand, then I totally recommend it. (4.6) A-

October ’14 Huge Sephora Haul

I noticed that a lot of Sephora Favorites looked really good this year. I wanted to put it off ’til it was closer to my birthday (in November) or the holidays, but after discovering that the Give Me Some Lip set is already sold out online, I decided to pick up the rest before it was too late. I also scored some other goodies I’ve been eyeing for a while. Major splurge? You bet. Early birthday/Christmas presents? Totally. Worth it? 100% percent.

 IMG_0027 IMG_0030

IMG_0029 IMG_0031

I’ll start off with the perks. Sephora was having a mascara week it seemed as all the 100-point perks were mascaras. So I indulged in a 250-point perk and grabbed a sample of Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb perfume. I’d heard great things about it and was curious to see what it smelled like. I decided on Clinique and Urban Decay mascaras (the latter of which ended up being foolish, as I coincidentally bought a sample of the same product in the Lash Stash). And finally, I used a promo code to grab a sample of Dior Diorshow, another mascara I’ve heard rave reviews about, as well as Diorshow Maximizer, a lash primer.

Next is Kat Von D’s Studded Kiss Lipstick in Poe. I originally wanted to grab this back in my September haul, but sadly, it was sold out at the time. So I knew I couldn’t pass it up this time around! Unlike other lippies which look bold in the tube but go on sheer, Poe is a true navy blue. I love the Studded Kiss formula and can’t wait to give this shade a test drive.

Another product I’ve been lusting over for a long time are Stila’s adorable palettes. I got In the Garden, a palette composed of warm earth tones, because I have hazel eyes and thought these kinds of shades would flatter them. Plus who can resist some good matte neutrals and pops of color? Not to mention it comes with an eyeliner as well. The packaging is sleek and feminine, and I love the shade names.

Now for the bulk of the haul–the holiday collections! I’ve always wanted to try a palette from Too Faced, and when I saw their seasonal Everything Nice Palette, I knew it had to be mine. Once I opened it, it was so me–pink and girly with bright and edgy shadows as well. It also came with 2 bronzers (one of which is Chocolate Soleil, which I love), 2 blushes, 3 brushes, and a sample of their Better Than Sex Mascara, which I’ve also heard fab things about. It also came with a cute, spacious clutch. This ended up being one of the products I was most excited about!

Some girls live for eyeliner. While I’m more of a lipstick girl myself, I can’t say no to Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils. So when I saw they were releasing Ten, a set of, you guessed it, 10 liners for the holidays (plus a sharpener), I knew I had to pick it up ASAP. It features nine samples of all-new shades (all of which are gorgeous), plus a full size Perversion, a gorgeous black matte eyeliner. This is another thing I can’t wait to test out!

And now what prompted me to indulge in this haul in the first place–the Sephora Favorites! I scored all except the one mentioned above, and once I saw them, I was even more bummed out I couldn’t grab Give Me Some Lip, because of the Sephora Favorites I got are great! The first is Meet Your Match, a set of 6 color-coordinated lip products and nail polishes. The purples are Nails Inc. polish in Devonshire Row with Bite Beauty Lush Fruit Lip Gloss in Strangefruit. The nudes are Hourglass Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Gloss in Child with Formula X Nail Color in Invincible. And lastly, the corals are Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in Girls Just Wanna Have Fun with Tarte Lipsurgence Lip Tint in Elite.

Next is the Glitz and Glam Party Essentials Sampler. I really loved the metallic silver clutch the products came in. It doesn’t feel cheap and could really function as a nighttime bag. Another great thing about this kit is that it features four full-size products! There are nine total items in the bag. First is Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Infrared Matte. This is one of those full-size items. Next is a deluxe sample of Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo. I love dry shampoos, so I’m definitely happy about this product! Another full-size baby is Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in Good Girl Gone Bad. Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Color in Rose Gold and Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eyeshadow in Metallic Dusty Rose look like they compliment each other very well. The Sephora Collection False Lashes in Astonish are full size. I love Benefit’s girly packaging and have heard great things about Watt’s Up! Highlighter, so I was excited to see the Luminous Champagne shade included. And lastly, there’s the (just about) full size Lancome Artliner Eyeliner in Noir, another product I’ve heard fabulous things about.

Draw The Line excited me because no one can deny the effect eyeliner can have on a look. This box gives you six options, one of which is full size. The liners are Sephora Collection Contour Eye Pencil 12 HR Wear in Black Lace, Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Dark Brown, Kat Von D Deluxe Tattoo Liner in Trooper, NARS Via Veneto Larger Than Life Long Wear Eyeliner in Black, Deluxe Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner in Blacquer, and a full size Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Double Ended Eye Pencil in Perversion and Rockstar.

Super Stars is another one of those interesting variety packs. I like these a bit more than kits with all one kind of product (like the all-eyeliner one above). This kit is very diverse, with 12 different cosmetics, haircare, and fragrance. The products are Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Dark Brown, Benefit POREfessional, Benefit They’re Real! Mascara in Jet Black, Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, Chloe by Chloe Rollerball, Formula X Nail Color in Ignite, Fresh Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment, Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil, NARS Blush in Orgasm, Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream in Light, Stila Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Intense Black, and Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Sin. Some of these, like the UD shadow, NARS blush, and Chloe Rollerball, are full size.

As an avid lip product junkie, I couldn’t pass up Give Me More Lip. There’s a little of everything–lipstick, gloss and balm. And there’s plenty to go around–this box contains 17(!) products! The items included are: Bare Minerals Marvelous Moxie Lipstick in Speak Your Mind, Benefit Hydrating Tinted Lip Balm in Posie, Bite Beauty Luminous Creme Lipstick in Palomino, Buxom Mini Full Bodied Lipstick in Menace, Fresh Sugar Berry Tinted Lip Treatment, Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Icon, Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Outlaw, Laura Mercier Lip Glace in Blush, Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Lip Colour in Red Armour, Make Up For Ever Waterproof Lip Liner Pencil, OCC Lip Tar Test Tube in Black Dahlia, Sephora Collection Rouge Infusion in 10 Red Essence, Stila Stay All Day Vinyl Lip Gloss in Nude Vinyl, Tarte Lipsurgence Lip Tint in Moody, Tarte Lipsurgence Power Pigment in Flush, Too Faced La Creme Color Drenched Lip Cream in Naked Dolly, and Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in Fuschia.

And finally, the Lash Stash. I first heard about the Sephora Favorites from Elle Fowler reviewing that year’s Lash Stash years ago, and it piqued my interest. Mascara completes a look to me–it can even wake you up when you don’t have time for much else. This kit includes 11 fab lash products: Benefit They’re Real!, Buxom Lash Mascara in Blackest Black, Clinique Dual Ended High Impact Mascara and Lash Primer, Josie Maran Argan Black Oil Mascara, Kat Von D Immortal Lash 24 HR Mascara, Lancome Hypnose Drama Mascara, Sephora Collection Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover, Sephora Collection Outrageous Curl Dramatic Volume and Curl Mascara, Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara in Jet Black, Urban Decay Perversion Mascara, and YSL Mascara Volume Effect Faux Baby Doll.

I’m so excited to try everything out! Naturally, reviews on the individual products as well as the Sephora Collections as a whole as soon as possible. I’m embaressed to admit I’m still posting reviews from last month’s haul! But I have more free time coming up, a large chunk which I can commit to blogging. Stay tuned!

Have you tried any of these products beauties? Tried any of the previous Sephora Collections? Do tell!

Lancome Definicils High Definition Mascara Review + Swatches

Picture 135

I’ve always been a fan of Lancome’s mascaras (Hypnose was one of the first mascaras I fell in love with). However, my wallet doesn’t love the price tag, so I don’t indulge in them as often as I’d like. So when I racked up enough points on my most recent Sephora haul to claim Definicils as a freebie, I knew I couldn’t pass it up.

The product description on Sephora’s site says that Definicils gives “lavishly long, perfectly defined lashes” that are “the ultimate in shaping and separation” with “superb definition.” I have to say, every single one of these promises was true. It applied smooth and dark. It went on easily, made my lashes look so long, and gave them great definition–they were spaced out like false lashes. I was impressed from the first use! (5/5)

I’m pleased to say Definicils made it through the whole day (8 hours) looking perfect. The product looked fresh and my lashed were still long and nicely curled at the end of the day. (I curled them with a lash curler first.) (5/5)

This is a drier mascara that doesn’t clump and applies, and lasts, flawlessly. It doesn’t say anything about being waterproof, but after a bad day and some tears, I still had perfect lashes. The definition, length, and curl didn’t quit, and the product never made my lashes feel crunchy or heavy. I had no experience with it flaking, running, or smudging. (5/5)

Picture 177

The wand has evenly spaced bristles and it’s all one length, not tapered at the end. Still, the end is small enough to get into the inner corner easily. The wand wasn’t too large or thick, and worked well. The product is in a sleek black plastic tube with thin gold detailing and lettering on the cap. It looks chic and minimal, an approach many higher end brands have. (5/5)

I have a sample size of this that contains 0.07 oz of product. The full, 0.23 oz product  costs $27.50 USD. That’s $119.56 per ounce (so still pretty expensive). However, this category looks beyond the number at product worth, i.e, bang for your buck. Is it an expensive mascara? Yes. Is it the kind of quality that warrants an expensive price tag? Yes. (5/5)

Wow Factor:
Definicils is all about wow factor! Everything about this mascara is impressive, from the length to the definition to the staying power. It did exactly what it said it would, and I loved it. (5/5)

I love, love, love this mascara! Lancome always knocks it out of the park in the lash department, and Definicils wasn’t a let down. I would definitely purchase a full-size version of this product and I recommend it to every single woman out there who’s looking for flawless, dark, defined, dramatic lashes. Totally worth it. 5 (A+)
